Summer should be a time of carefree relaxation and fun for teenagers. While you want to encourage your child to harness the freedom of this special season of their life, it’s also important to use the time wisely so that they get the most out of this downtime. Here are four tips to help you to assist your high schooler in making the most out of their summer break.
Set Up Some Study Time
It is a well-established fact that some students experience academic regression over the summer break. Known as the summer slide, this regression can be combated with a bit of structured study time. Taking the time to keep up with reading, math problems, or any other kind of work that engages the brain will pay off big dividends when school is back in session. Depending on the age of your teen, this might also be the ideal time to begin SAT or ACT prep work.
Be Careful on the Roads
It’s been proven that accidents increase in summer, with teens getting hit the hardest. Before your teenager hits the road, be sure that they are well equipped to handle the dangers of the road. Distracted driving is a significant concern for teenage drivers who have a hard time putting away their phones and concentrating on the road. As a parent, you can remind your teen to put his or her phone away during the entire drive.
Get Active
The long days of summer are ideal for getting outside and getting active. Encourage your teen to find a hobby, pick up a new sport, or establish a regular exercise routine. Not only will this add structure to their summer days, but it will also provide a boost to their overall physical fitness levels.
Hit the Workforce
The summer is the perfect time for a teenager to enter the workforce for the first time. A summer job is a great way to build up the college application resume, earn some extra money, and gain lifelong skills. Holding down a part-time job will also boost the teen’s self-confidence and teach them how to become a responsible adult.
With the right planning and mindset, your teen can make an abundance of fun memories while still being productive over their summer break. Don’t let this extra time pass you by with nothing to show for it!
