Why Summer Is the Best Time to Start ACT and SAT Prep

Most DFW high schoolers spend the school year completely maxed out. Between classes, sports, extracurriculars, and a social life, adding ACT or SAT prep to the mix is genuinely hard. Something always gives.
That’s what makes summer such a valuable window.
The Case for Summer Prep
Summer gives students something they almost never have during the school year: time. Not unlimited time, but enough to do test prep properly without it feeling like one more thing piled onto an already overwhelming schedule.
Here’s why that matters for test scores. The ACT and SAT reward consistency over cramming. A student who works with a tutor once a week for eight weeks, does their homework in between, and takes a full practice test near the end will almost always outperform a student who tries to cram the same material into two weeks before a test date. Summer makes the eight-week model easy. The school year makes it hard.
When Should Students Start Prepping?
The right time to start depends on where your student is academically and what their goals are.
For most students, junior year is the primary testing window. The September through March ACT and SAT dates during junior year are the main opportunities, and many students take their first official test somewhere in that range. Starting prep in the summer before junior year puts you in great shape for those early junior year dates.
For students who may be in range of a National Merit qualifying score, earlier is better. The PSAT is taken in October of junior year, and there’s no retake. If National Merit is on the table, prep should start well before junior year, ideally in the spring of sophomore year or the summer before junior year, so the PSAT itself is part of the preparation strategy.
The bottom line: summer is a great time to start or continue prep, but the right timeline is different for every student. We’ll map out the exact right schedule during your free consultation.
What Summer Prep Looks Like at MJ Prep
We keep summer sessions flexible because we know students need downtime too. Sessions happen in your home or on Zoom, on whatever schedule works. Most students do one two-hour session per week with about an hour of homework in between. Total weekly time commitment: under three hours.
We start with a free consultation and diagnostic test to figure out whether the ACT or SAT is the better fit, what score is realistic, and what the tutoring plan should look like. Then we get to work.
Who Should Start This Summer
Rising juniors are the sweet spot. You have enough time to test multiple times before applications are due, and your first score isn’t your only shot. Rising seniors who haven’t tested yet should contact us immediately; there’s still time, but the timeline is tighter.
Rising sophomores who are academically strong and motivated can also benefit from getting an early read on which test suits them better.
