High Schoolers: Use Your Summer!
While summer is known for being a time to kick back and relax, it’s also the perfect opportunity to get ahead on your test prep and college applications. When high schoolers use their summers to volunteer, find a job, or even study, they build their skills and resume to stand out from their peers.
Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way for high school students to enhance their college applications. Admissions officers consider extracurricular activities when going through applications, and those activities are almost as important as grades and test scores. If you know what you want to study, it may be beneficial to find a volunteer opportunity that relates. Medical students can volunteer at hospitals or clinics. Future teachers can volunteer to work with kids at summer camps. On the other hand, if you don’t know what you want to do but you’re really passionate about something, it’s a good idea to just volunteer doing something you love.

Summer Jobs
Summer jobs can also make you stand out on your college applications. It will be attractive to admissions officers to see that you can commit to something and stick with it for a while. Whether in retail or an office job, work experience is a great way to demonstrate your work ethic and dedication. Internships are also good to have on your resume. Those tend to relate more to what you want to do in the future. If you want to get into law school, getting experience as an intern at a law firm will be incredibly attractive on your application.

Learning
Studying and test prep during the summer will help to keep your mind fresh. Summer is the perfect time to improve your SAT and ACT scores. Rather than waiting until the Fall to begin test prep, if you start in the summer, you’ll be months ahead of your peers. You can find previously released SAT and ACT tests to practice with. Take summer classes to knock out credits while staying in the school mindset. Sign up for summer test prep workshops. Visit colleges.
