Contrary to what popular Hollywood movies may portray, college students have a lot on their plates. Whether it’s studying for a big exam, working part-time to pay for their food, or doing community service for their pledge, you can quickly see how college students begin to neglect their well-being. Here are some of the most important details college students should never forget.
Health
Your body might be young and can, in fact, handle a lot of stress. However, that doesn’t mean all that stress will simply go away on its own. Constantly pulling all-nighters and getting an hour or two of sleep per night can really mess with both your physical and mental health. Studies have shown that not getting enough sleep due to all-nighters can actually backfire. The first thing to go when you’re not getting enough sleep is your cognitive function, which means your memory and decision-making skills are distorted, making all those hours essentially useless.
Your physical health is also very important as a lack of movement due to long hours of sleeping or bad eating habits can really affect your immune system. Getting sick in college can exact a huge toll on your grades. Unlike in high school, nobody is going to go the extra mile to make sure you are getting your notes. It’s all up to you. Therefore, it’s highly advisable that you take advantage of your school’s gym and running fields to get in those exercise sessions.
Car
Some students are lucky enough to have a car in college. It’s important that you take care of your vehicle and remember driving safety tips to avoid any serious problems. College facilities are a tricky place to both drive and park your car. Always make sure you are going the speed limit required by the campus in order to avoid any collisions with students or other cars on the road. Perform regular check-ups on your vehicle such as oil changes and the level of air in your tires. These little things can really become serious problems if left unchecked.
Organize
While it’s obvious that college students have a lot on their plates, often that stress is magnified not because of the activities but because of a lack of organization on the student’s part. In order to get organized, you should use a planner, a whiteboard calendar, the calendar app on your phone, and any other helpful tools. These resources will help provide you with a little breathing room between each activity. Often, a lack of organization can directly be tied to the stress that students feel on a daily basis. Although this might not work for everyone, it’s necessary to find out what works for you.
College can be one of the most stressful but enjoyable times of your life. It’s crucial to understand how important it is to be able to balance all the things going on around you. This starts with remembering to take care of yourself first.
